Have you ever wonder what the purpose of YOUR life is? Not the purpose of life, the purpose of YOUR life in specific, relative to the rest of the people in the world.
I feel like it’s one of the most difficult concepts to wrap your head around, but I also feel like it’s one of the most important concepts to grasp. Most people get frustrated and anxious when thinking about their purpose, they think finding their purpose is this complicated thing that you need to do in order to live your life, but I disagree.
People think finding their purpose means asking themselves, what do I have to give to the world? And more often than not, they come up with no answer and they feel that they don’t have anything to offer the world. To be honest, if that’s the way you are going to approach it, then it probably is going to be an outcome with no answer. The question you should be asking is: What can the world gain from me?
I’ve been struggling with this concept as well, but recently my eyes have opened and I’ve realized some very profound things. One thing I’ve realized is that our purpose changes daily. Now you might think, Lewis how is our purpose changing everyday? Isn’t our purpose supposed to be a lifelong goal? Well, the answer to that is more simple than you think, the answer is NO. Your purpose isn’t a lifetime goal, your purpose is simply just TO BE.
Now you ask me, Lewis what does that mean? I feel it’s best explained by using a real life example. On Sunday night I went to a friends apartment just to go fetch something. We started a small conversation which turned into something I didn’t expect. I could see in her eyes that she was going through something and hadn’t been able to talk to someone about it, she had kind of been hiding her feelings, not only from the world, but also from herself. In that moment of strength that she opened up to me I was able to be there for her. For Sunday that was my purpose, to help someone going through a tough time.
Last week, I played sport for my Residence, the week before that I created a video for my Residence, today I was able to help someone with a project and today I was able to write this message.
So you see, you can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect the dots looking back. Everything you do links up towards your purpose in life. I can’t tell you what my purpose will be for tomorrow, but I can tell you what my purpose was for today.
Everyone has a purpose, you don’t have to go find your purpose, you’re already fulfilling your purpose day by day.
A few scoops of sand a day will eventually fill up the beach. Finding your purpose daily will help you to eventually change the world. It doesn’t matter how small, a change is a change. You are making an impact on peoples lives, you are making an impact on the world.
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change change. If you change the way you look at your purpose, the way you affect the world will change.
